**Pre-dawn hours**
Descending from one of the taller Cedar trees that towered in the little grove between the city to the northwest and the darker forest to the east, a creature slowly emerged. The accompanying spiderish shadow, generated by the bright lights of the distant urban center, easily made its way down. The six long arms and pair of dexterous legs sped the beast [[earthward]] with ease.

**Fishing District of Kyzikos**
[[Piers|piers]], busy with activity, extended out into the [[lake|Lake Dindymon]]. The air was rich with the essence of [[fish]] and the sweat of [[Dolionian fishermen]].
Zephyra (either: "rubbed the sleep out of her eyes. She wished [[Alexandros|Alexandros at Pier]] a good morning and inquired about the bite","tightened the straps on her [[backpack]] as she readied herself for a morning of the usual [[fishing chores]]").
A sleek silver [[fishing vessel]] sat at the end of one of the piers. Alongside the craft, [[Alexandros|Alexandros at Pier]] was busy maintaining equipment, assisting the launching of boats, and giving advice. Alexandros, seeing Zephyra step confidently onto the pier, smiled and said "Good luck today. [[Neo-perch|neo-perch]] and [[spectral-bass]] have been plentiful so far this morning. The [[speckled quasi-pike]] have been vainly chasing [[red proto-herring]] again." He (either:"saluted","bowed") and gestured towards [[one of the boats|fishing vessel at pier]]."
The [[Fishmonger]], surrounded by a swarm of fishermen, was looking over the crates of catches and [[shouting offers]].
**Looking at the piers**
These [[landings|Fishing District]] were built in the early days after the arrival of [[King Kyzikos|About King Kyzikos]]. Although mostly wooden, they are sturdy and have stood firm against the steady waves of Lake Dindymos.
**Looking at Lake Dindymon**
This immense body of water sat between the City of Kyzikos to the west and foothills of [[Mount Dindymon]] to the east. In fact, Zephyra could clearly see "Bear Mountain" (as the local Dolionines sometimes called it) rising above the surrounding forest.
(either:"A large bird, flying high from the direction of the Mountain, passed over her, and","Zephyra looked up at the roar of engines erupting out of [[Aether Apeiron]]. A [[trading vessel]] manuvered smoothly for a landing at the [[Fairhaven|Spaceport]] and") drew her attention back to the [[piers|Fishing District]].
**Hoping to catch some fish**
Wishing never once caught a fish. A bountiful catch came from having [[patience and focus|Fishing District]].
**Watching the fishermen**
These men were too busy to be bothered.
Zephyra (either: "redirected attention back to [[her duties|Fishing District]]","focused back to [[her morning ritual|Fishing District]]").
**Watching Alexandros**
The eight year-old, despite his youth, was wise in the ways of the water. He wore a white chiton which was draped with a bright red himation.
(either:"Alexandros spoke to a fisherman about the best place to fish.","As a fishing vessel prepared to cast off, Alexandros untied the ropes which had secured the craft.","Alexandros sat down and rested for a moment. He had been up well before dawn.","The young fisherman, Alexandros, instructed a novice on how to repair a torn net.","Alexandros stood up straight, looked at Zephyra, and saluted. 'Good day, Captain!' the young boy exclaimed and they both laughed.")
The [[Fishing District]] would not operate half as well without the steady involvement of this boy.
**Looking at the backpack**
The rucksack was a secondhand acquisition from [[Maritimus]]. Despite its worn and tattered appearance, Zephyra cherished it. [[Tremarctos]] told her that this was the actual satchel that Maritimus carried during his fabled journeys into Aether Apeiron.
The sachel was made of [[Khalkotaur]] hide and, despite its worn appearance was durable beyond measure.
If she could sell enough [[fish|Fishing District]] today and make a visit to the [[Agora]], maybe she would but something actually have a use for the empty pack. More often than not, the goods were either too expensive, she was too poor, or usually both at once.
**Thinking about your morning ritual**
Catching [[eels]] had become a morning ritual for Zephyra. If she caught one, the [[Fishmonger]] would gladly accept it. Any other fish would simply become a bonus for her [[coin pouch]]... But what use were the [[hemiobol coins]] anyway? The goods in Khythos were simply too expensive and the land continued to freely provide enough for her survival.
The [[Fishing District]] roared with eary morning preparations and the sending off of vessels.
**Inspecting your boat**
The sleek metallic skin of the vessel, being a sharp contrast to the [[rudder]] at aft, shown brightly as it was bathed in the warm glow of [[Propontis]] rising into the morning sky. Its [[triangular sails]] fluttered in the [[breeze]].
Zephyra looked at the old boat and tried to refocus in the early morning light. The vessel would be worthless sitting here tied to the [[pier|Fishing District]].
**Thinking about Neo-perch**
This fish was yellow with green vertical stripes.
Thinking about fish never once caught a fish. A bountiful catch came from having [[patience and focus|Fishing District]].
**Thinking about Spectral-bass**
Thinking about fish never once caught a fish. A bountiful catch came from having [[patience and focus|Fishing District]].
**Thinking about Speckled Quasi-pike**
Thinking about fish never once caught a fish. A bountiful catch came from having [[patience and focus|Fishing District]].
**Thinking about Red Proto-herring**
A bright red shimmer always surrounded these enchanting creatures. The fish seemed to hold their heads high in a posture of self-importance as if they held the key to all the mysteries, puzzles, and dilemas of life.
The reality was these little fish were good eating. End of story. That was that. Nothing more and nothing less.
Thinking about fish never once caught a fish. A bountiful catch came from having [[patience and focus|Fishing District]].
**In the Fishing vessel at the pier**
Zephyra stood on the deck of the boat.
(either:"A [[cerato-gull|cerato-gull]] landed on the mast, spied a little proto-herring, and flew down after it.","[[Alexandros|Alexandros in Boat]] jumped onto the deck and inspected the [[sails|triangular sails]]. Generally satisfied with their condition, he disembarked.")
(either:"A large fishing vessel","Several small craft") (either:"left the [[Fishing District]] and headed out to open waters","pulled in and unloaded their barrels onto the [[pier|Fishing District]]").
She considered [[casting off|outbound]] and venturing out into the lake.
**Watching the Fishmonger**
The seasoned fish merchant, surrounded by a swarm of [[fishermen|Dolionian fishermen]], was looking over the piles of catches and [[shouting offers]].
The crowd surrounded the merchant as he flashed complex hand signals to the eager sellers, who, in turn, barked out the details of their catch. Zephyra would, as usual, have to work hard to gain his attention and complete her transaction.
Seeing her just standing there and looking clueless, the Fishmonger raised his eyebrows and grinned. "Zephyra, after all of these years, you should know me well enough by now... I will gladly accept any fish that you can give me. And I will pay you, of course. But you know how the King loves his filleted eel... Lightly breaded, golden brown, and with a just a squeeze or two of lemon." he said softly.
The Fishmonger then turned to the crowd, raised his hands to the heavens, and proclaimed upwards, "Fish is fish, but Kyzikos demands his eel!" Like athletes roused by their trainer before an event in the Panhellenic Games, the Dolionian fishermen took on a fierce and focused aspect as they cheered enthusiastically.
(either:"A pat on the back by a fellow fisherman","The sudden uproar") snapped Zephyra's focus back [[toward her task|Fishing District]].
**Listening to the Fishmonger**
(either:"The old man made an offer to one of the fisherman for some red proto-herring and the price was instantly accepted.","A young fisherman rolled her barrel of [[spectral-bass]] up to the feet of the Fishmonger. As it rolled over his foot, he frowned in annoyance. Despite the bad start, he offered her a goodly sum. Unhindered, the girl rejected it and muffled voices reflected the amazement within the crowd. The old man stood silent for a moment, scowled, and then announced a new price with a smile. The girl added to her purse and then skipped away.","A bold fisherman bounded up directly to the Fishmonger and demanded a lofty price for his catch. The old man made a counter-offer, the self-assurred seller promptly rejected, and the Fishmonger turned his attention to the other fishermen.")
[[This place|Fishing District]] was always a roar of commotion from morning until noon or so.
**Thinking about King Kyzikos**
While the King took care of each part of this City, he paid special attention to the [[Fishing District]].
**Looking at Mount Dindymon**
{
<p>Zephyra had heard that a beautiful, but deadly, witch lived in a cave high atop "Bear Mountain." It was also said that a mighty lion, her beastly pet, guarded the area. While neither man nor Gegenees would attempt it, Zephyra had climbed the mountain many times over the years. She had seen neither hag nor cat. "Nonsense," she said. "Only a fool would believe in such things."</p>
<p>But even as she said it, she thought back to her visits there. The view was total. There was a sort of magic and an uncanny clarity at that height. One could see everything from up there... Fairhaven Spaceport, the city of Kyzikos, the [[Fishing District]], the lake, the sea to the west, the dense forest where the Gegenees lived their elusive existence, the lush corn fields, and the ragged ruins to the south.</p>
}
**Looking up at Aether Apeiron**
The stars had vanished as Propontis had risen to its mid-morning perch.
The bright star reflected brilliantly on the waters of [[Lake Dindymon]].
**Looking up at the trading vessel**
(either:"A sleek vessel","Bloated and fat, a rounded craft") (either:"opened its flaps as it breaked to begin landing procedures.","cast a shadow over Zephyra and her vessel.")
Zephyra wondered what goods it might be carrying. Local products surely, but perhaps also luxuries from far-off places. Maybe (either:"a perfumes and lotions from Aphros?","luxurious dresses and shoes from the House of Hora?","hunting and athletic gear from Potnia Theron Sport?","fine wines from Diwonuso Vineyards?")(either:"Some of the elders even say that once a vessel from Herma Aetherlines, carrying passengers of strange dress and accent, landed here long ago. So few remember it that seems the stuff of fantasy.","So rarely do such products appear, many say such crafters are long dead. A product of a lost place and a forgotten time.")
The hot breeze of engine fires washed over Zephyra as it passed overhead. She returned her gaze back toward the busy activities of the [[piers|Fishing District]].
**Looking at the Spaceport**
Like the head and neck of the familiar Camelopardalis that worked the fields of Kyzikos, the spire of the control tower could be seen beyond structures of the City.
(either:"A fisherman bumped into Zephyra as he made his way to his vessel parked at the [[Dock|Fishing District]].","A young boy, carrying a list from one of the merchants, ran by Zephyra on his way to the [[Fishmonger|Fishing District]].","A young girl, holding a basket of light breakfast, ran by Zephyra on her way to her [[father|Fishing District]].")
<b>Looking up at Propontis</b>
The shimmering golden magnificence of Propontis shown down on Zephyra and all the inhabitants of Kyzikos. Partially veiled by a few white billowing [[clouds]], the star slowly moved higher toward its midday pinnacle.
<b>Looking at the sails</b>
Large, bright green and billowing, the sails captured the winds with ease. The [[fishing vessel]] seemed to rear up and buck like a racing stallion in the gate.
**Experiencing the breeze**
The faint aroma of cooking fires laced with earthy spices could be savored originating somewhere from the southeast. While most of the Dolionian citizens would never be able to detect it, Zephyra knew its source in an instant. It took powerful culinary magic to cut through the fishy fog of the [[Fishing District]].
<b>Looking at the clouds</b>
If Zephyra looked hard enough, one of them looked somewhat like the fierce [[Chimaera]].
<b>Thinking about a "Chimera"</b>
//"It was said that Chimaera was not human, but rather a goddess. She had the body of a goat, the tail of a snake, and the head of a lion. Breath of deadly fire and fume surrounded her, but Bellerophon, guided by the divine, slew the terrible beast."//
Assuming that these beasts actually existed, Zephyra felt sorry for the Chimaera. "To be many things and not truly either... all at the same time..." she reflected. As (either:"a hurried fisherman bumped into her","a wave splashed up into her face","Alexandros smacked her playfully with a neo-perch"), Zephyra [[regained her focus|Fishing District]] and inspected her net.
**Thinking about Maritimus**
Easily the oldest Gegenees in the tribe, the fur of Maritimus was as white as he was ancient. He spent most of his time sitting quietly. Zephyra would often sit next to him as he gazed out into Aether Apeiron. There was hushed talk that Maritimus had actually sailed far out amongst the stars in his youth, but how could that be? The Gengenees, never ones to leave even the borders of their forest home, lived a sheltered existence and even the Kyzikosian fleet could only reach our nearest neighbors.
"No time for sitting now." she thought. "It was time to [[get back to it|Fishing District]]."
**Thinking about Tremarctos**
The old soothsayer was wise in the ways of sight. Zephyra had consulted her from time to time. "Could little bits of stone, sticks, and bone really tell the future?" she wondered. "Maybe if the crone was here in the [[Fishing District]] rather than grounded in that Yurt, she could give some hints about the fishing prospects."
**Thinking about the Khalkotaur**
This creature and its kind were huge bulls with bronze hooves and bronze mouths. It was said that they could even breathe fire. It is said that Haphaistion himself had presented King Aeetes, the king of [[Colchis]], with the Khalkotauroi as a gift.
Zephyra adjusted the straps on the [[backpack]].
**Looking in the direction of the Inner City**
Zephyra very much wished for some free time. Maybe a visit to the [[Gardens of Kyzikos]]? Or a trip outside the City to see her mentor, [[Maritimus]]? But she knew that she had work to do. The [[Fishmonger]] wanted fish... and, in particular, one specific delicacy.
**Thinking about eels**
Eels were a delicacy and, without question, a favorite of the King. The creatures were not going to willingly jump into her net as she stood on the piers of the [[Fishing District]]. Zephyra knew she had to [[go out into the open water|fishing chores]].
**Looking at coin pouch**
Zephyra looked into the coin pouch and saw that it contained only a few coins. [[Ursus]] gave the pouch to her for her thirteenth birthday. As Zephyra’s fortune was small, it was more than adequate to store her coins these last five years.
She remembered the words of Aeschylus who had written: "//Of prosperity mortals can never have enough//." Zephyra had seen little prosperity, but she was thankful for what she had.
**Thinking about Hemiobol**
Those little coins were so small that five or so could be laid out on the end of her pointer finger.
The hemiobol coins in this area were stamped with a wheat grain on the front and a wheat ear on the back.
If she wanted to earn some, she knew she had to [[get moving|fishing chores]].
**Thinking about Ursus**
Chief among the Gegenees, the hulking mass of muscle and fur ruled with quiet strength and insight.
When her [[fishing chores]] were done, she could go where she pleased. Maybe a visit to see him was in order.
**Looking at the cerato-gull**
The wonder of this bird’s colorful and lengthy plumage was rivaled only by the spiraled horns which protruded from its head.
Zephyra marveled at its natural abilities to catch fish with seeming ease. "Enough daydreaming," she thought. "[[Now it is my turn|fishing vessel at pier]]."
**Watching Alexandros**
(either:"Alexandros inspected the rudder of [[Zephyra's craft|fishing vessel at pier]].","Alexandros sat down and rested for a moment on the [[deck of her boat|fishing vessel at pier]]. He had been up well before dawn.","Alexandros began releasing the ropes which secured [[her vessel|fishing vessel at pier]].","Alexandros climbed on to [[the deck|fishing vessel at pier]], looked at Zephyra, and saluted. 'Good day, [[Trierarch]]!' the young boy exclaimed and they both laughed.")
**Aboard Fishing Vessel in Lake**
The sails retracted and the boat sat motionless on the crystal-clear waters. The piers were barely visible far [[to the west|inbound]].
(either:"Zephyra looked down into the lake and could see an green reticulo-eel swimming far below.","A speckled quasi-pike surfaced, looked around as if he was on the hunt, and then returned back into the depths.","A panicked yellow spectral-bass jumped and nearly landed into the boat. Maybe it was being pursued by a mighty speckled quasi-pike?","Zephyra heard a splash to the starboard of the vessel. It was probably a good-sized red proto-herring.","A spotted neo-perch jumped out of the water.")
She gripped her net, looked into the waters, and began calculating where to [[throw her net|first cast]].
**Aboard Fishing Vessel in Lake**
Zephyra pulled the net up and, with great effort, dropped it onto the deck. She opened it and saw it contained (either:"a small speckled quasi-pike","a modest speckled quasi-pike","a large speckled quasi-pike","a small number of red proto-herring","a modest of red proto-herring","a large of red proto-herring","a handful of spectral-bass","a small number of spectral-bass","a great number of spectral-bass"). She was generally pleased, but the one creature that would be more highly treasured by the Fishmonger was still eluding her.
Zephyra carefully placed the fish into a water-filled barrel and scanned the lake. Deciding on a potentially fruitful spot, she [[cast the net|second cast]] into the waters a second time.
**Thinking about a Trierarch**
The commander of a starship was huge responsibility. Most famous, were the captains of the Athenian Triremes. The vessels were heavily-armed, operated by skillful crews, and maintained dominance of the trade routes.
She reflected back, as best she could, on portions the tales she was told as a child. Zephyra remembered famous names such as Meges of Dulichium and the sacred Echinean islands who had commanded forty ships. Idomeneus, whose skill with a spear was without equal, is reported to have led the Cretans of Cnossus sailing on eighty ships. Podalirius and Machaon, sons of Aesculapius, from Tricca and Ithome captained thirty ships so say the legends.
Zephyra's [[fishing vessel|fishing vessel at pier]] was nothing compared to those enormous craft.
**Thinking about the Gardens**
These public lands, which partially surrounded the Palace, were open to all citizens by decree of the King Kyzikos. Walled by towering trees, the space was a maze of ornimental bushes and brilliant flowers. A large pond was lined with benches and small private gazebos.
Zephyra though about the cooling air and calming scents of her favorite resting place for a moment, but the pungent odor of the [[Docks|Fishing District]] brought her back to reality.
**Caring for the Rudder**
Zephyra got out of the vessel to get a better look. She cleaned the rudder daily to keep it in good condition. Nano-snails, algae, and other creatures latched onto the vessel after nearly every voyage.
This time only a few nano-snails had to be removed.
The [[craft|fishing vessel]] would be worthless without a properly working rudder.
**Heading out of Port**
Zephyra took the wheel and confidently increased the throttle. The engines hummed like a coordinated swarm of incandecent gravi-gnats as she guided the craft out into open water. Once out in the open water, she stopped the engines and pulled the lever to open the sails.
Looking back to the west, Zephyra could still see the frenzy of activity [[back at the Docks|fishing vessel at pier]]. Out on the waters of Lake Dindymon, however, it was quiet and peaceful.
Zephyra removed her hood and her hair, now unbridled and dancing on the wind, gleamed in the light of Propontis.
This immense body of water sat between the City of Kyzikos to the west and foothills of Mount Dindymos to the east. In fact, Zephyra could clearly see "Bear Mountain" (as the local Dolionines sometimes called it) rising above the surrounding forest.
She manuvered the craft and pick out a spot that looked promising and decided to [[begin fishing]].
**Heading back to Port**
She took the helm and opened the sails. They fluttered and bucked until Zephyra adjusted the angle. The fabrics fattened up with a tight popping sound as they grabbed the wind.
Zephyra adjusted the rudder, lifted up her hood, and made her way [[back to the piers|fishing vessel at pier]].
**Thinking about Colchis**
Zephyra had only heard of Colchis once or twice. She thought that maybe it existed far to the east of [[Propontis]].
The trade ships of the Kyzikosian fleet had a limited range and could only go as far as the Outpost at Prokonnesos and a few of the neighboring systems.

**Looking at the Scat**
The dung was fresh and was a sure sign that the deer who left the deposit was likely nearby.
The [[pathway|thin deer path]], along with the others like it that criss-crossed this forest, connected bedding grounds, feeding areas, and water sources of the inhabitants.
**Traveling through the City**
Sounds erupted around her as she passed through the portal. Citizens making their way here and there passed by without taking any notice of her.
A young girl, having the vantage, looked up an into Zephyra's hooded face and then at the wrapped pole. She smiled, pointed at the bronze speartip protruding from the top, and then tugged at her (either:"father's","mother's") sleeve. Pulling the hood down father and looking away, Zephyra quickly moved through the crowd and vanished.
After weaving up and through the zig-zag streets of southern Kyzikos, she stood in front of the wooden archway that led into the [[Fishing District]].
**Inside the Old Shed**
{

The creature pulled the door open slowly and took a step inside.

</p>
<p>
In the distance, several farm houses rested alongside their fields.
</p>
}
**In the Old Shed**
A mouse, busy searching vainly for kernels of corn in the long-forgotten structure, climbed to the top of one of the amphoras and sat on the broken lid. Familiar with its surroundings and the visitor, it looked at the fearsome beast with disinterest and rested comfortably.
The creature opened the chest. One of the monster's hands pulled a cord just below its neck. As Propontis shone brightly through a broken window, four clawed arms fell away as well as the fur-covered skin.
The first rays of morning light blazed on her hair and she wiped some sweat from her forehead. The bear pelt, a cherished possession gained during a sacred hunt with Ursus, was folded carefully and placed into the chest.
She [[reached in]] to find other articles to wear.
**Dressing in the Shed**
Zephyra pulled a chiton over herself and fastened it with a strophion just below her breasts. Next, she laced up some leather sandals over her mud-soled feet.
Despite the hot stuffy air of the shed's interior, the morning was still early and quite cool. She pulled a himation on over her shoulders and fit a wide-brimmed petasos on her head.
After slipping the strap of a full backpack over her shoulder and taking what appeared to be a long pole wrapped in fabric tied securely with leather cords, she eyed the door and [[made for countryside]].
**Traveling through the Countryside**
She walked a few miles before thirst set upon her. Soon Zephyra came upon one of many farmhouses that dotted the farming district that laid south of the City. She sat upon an empty barrel and leaned back against the wall of the dwelling.
After drinking her fill from the wineskin, Zephyra hitched a ride on a wagon heading north. The two Camelopardalis, employing their long powerful legs, pulled the haul of corn with strideful ease as they scanned the horizon from the tall vantage point their long necks provided.
After some time, Zephyra came to the edge of a well-worn section of Kyzikos. Zephyra removed her petasos and lifted the hood of the himation over her head. A [[stone archway|through the city]], crumbling and ancient, opened in front of her and Zephyra jumped off the cart.
Over the low wall that bordered the City, Zephyra could faintly hear conversation and the beginnings of a day full of commerce and industry. The aroma of cooking fires attacked her insides.
**Thinking about a xiphos**
While Zephyra had never held one, swords were in common use by the guards who patroled the King's Palace.
The craft descended and was blocked from view as it passed behind a group of dazzling residential towers. The highrises projected a long shadow over the [[piers|Fishing District]].
**Aboard Fishing Vessel in Lake**
Zephyra lifted the net up and placed it onto the deck. She looked inside and saw it contained (either:"a small speckled quasi-pike","a modest speckled quasi-pike","a large speckled quasi-pike","a small number of red proto-herring","a modest of red proto-herring","a large of red proto-herring","a handful of spectral-bass","a small number of spectral-bass","a great number of spectral-bass"). The creature still eluded her.
Zephyra poured the fish into a water-filled barrel, located another site, and [[cast the net|third cast]] into the waters a third time.
**Aboard Fishing Vessel in Lake**
The rope began to vibrate and a faint hum could be heard. Zephyra stiffed as prickles of electricity seized her arms. With renewed vigor, she pulled the rope in an effort ot bring the net to the surface.
A flash of light erupted from the depths and a several small fish rose to the surface. Stunned by some unknown force, they floated on the waters in stillness.
Zephyra summoned her strength and pulled the net higher and closer to the boat. As the net surfaced, bolts of lightning spanned out across the waves and wrapped themselves around Zephyra's straining hands and up her arms.
With [[one last effort|catch of eels]], she managed to bring the net and its electic haul onto the deck.
**The Catch of Eels**
A surge of electricity shot through Zephyra's left arm as she grabbed one of the eels. After years of handling these beasts, she was accustomed to it. And, besides, this fellow was a small one. Legend spoke, however, of massive eels in the depths of this lake... Creatures capable of generating many gigawatts of power in a single strike.
Clearly such tales were nonsense. In all of her experience on this lake, she had never seen such a beast.
These little creatures however were not mythical. They were real. These little creatures would fetch a fine price back at the Docks.
She took the helm and opened the sails. They fluttered and bucked until Zephyra, in the knowing manner of a seasoned sailor, adjusted the angle. Like many times before, the fabrics fattened up with a tight popping sound as they grabbed what was left of the faint mid-day wind.
Zephyra adjusted the rudder, lifted up her hood, and made her way [[back to the piers|returning the catch]].
**Returning with the Catch**
[[Alexandros|Alexandros after the catch]] looked pleased as Zephyra pulled into the Docks.
Zephyra (either:"sighed heavily","stretched her back","lifted her arms over her head and yawned deeply"). It had been a long morning, but now it was time to [[call it an end|selling fish]]. The [[Fishmonger|Fishmonger after the catch]] stood at the center of a still [[fanatic group of fisherman]].
**Looking at Alexandros**
The face of Alexandros beamed as he caught the lines that Zephyra was pitching to him. A good catch, and more importantly a good barter session on her part, would perhaps mean a few more coins in his pocket.
(either:"He tightened one of the lines and turned to see a crowd forming around the Fishmonger. Zephyra began lifting barrels out onto [[the Dock|returning the catch]].","He looked out into the lake and followed the waves all of the way to the far horizon. Alexandros gaze then met the base of Mount Dindymon. He followed it up the spire which pointed like a spearhead into the heart Aether Apeiron. Not one to wander into daydreams, Alexandros [[collected himself and got back to work|returning the catch]].")
A rumble of faint thunder sounded from the clear skies over the realm of Kyzikos.
**Into the Fray**
Zephyra pushed her way through and crowd and approached the Fishmonger. After completing business regarding a barrel full of undersized neo-perch, he examined her catch.
The Fishmonger, after thinking a moment and counting on his net-scarred fingers, offered (either:"50 hemiobol for the general lot of the fish and 500 hemiobol for the eels.","100 hemiobol for the fish and 300 hemiobol for the eels.","200 hemiobol for the fish and another 400 specifically for the eels.")
She considered whether to [[accept the offer]] or [[renegotiate for a better price]].
**Looking at the Fishmonger**
Even at this distance, she could still hear his roaring voice bark out offers. He was a tough negotiator and Zephyra knew she had to bring all of her cunning and skill.
(either:"A slap on the back from Alexandros refocused her [[back to her task|returning the catch]].","One of the fish jumped from the barrel. As Zephyra picked it up, she realized she was slowing down and needed to [[get in line quickly|returning the catch]].")
**Looking at the Crowd**
The Fishmonger stood on an elevated platform surrounded by men selling their wares. On the other edge of the circle, women and children waited to carry the wares to the Agora.
(either:"A slap on the back from Alexandros refocused her [[back to her task|returning the catch]].","One of the fish jumped from the barrel. As Zephyra picked it up, she realized she was slowing down and needed to [[get in line quickly|returning the catch]].")
**Accepting the offer**
From under her hood, Zephyra accepted the offer and placed the coins in her pouch. The second half of the day was now hers to [[do with as she may]].
**Rejecting the offer**
Zephyra folded her arms across her chest and took a step back from the Fishmonger. "Think me a fool do you?" she smiled. The Fishmonger, upon recognizing the voice, looked uncomfortable and ran some more calculations.
"Alright. Alright..." groaned the Fishmonger. After thinking again and counting out new figures, he offered (either:"300 hemiobol for the general lot of the fish and 700 hemiobol for the eel.","50 hemiobol for the fish and 900 hemiobol for the eel.","300 hemiobol for the fish and another 800 specifically for the eel.")
The Fishmongers face was now stern and began to look upon the catches from the other fisherman. She pondered on whether to [[take the coins]] or [[call the old man's bluff]].
**Ending the Morning**
{
<p>Zephyra walked back to her vessel and sat upon the deck. Still wet and slimy from the recent venture, the surface provided some relief from burning heat of Propontis.</p>
<p>As Alexandros walked by, she tossed him a cut of the profits. He saluted her and disappeared into the City.</p>
<p>As the docks began to clear out, Zephyra could hear the sounds of haggling and the smells of exotic goods from beyond the archway to the west.
<p>The swaying of the deck began to lull her to sleep, but she resisted the temptation. The day was hers to do with as she may and she gathered herself up and <a href="AAE-001-003.html">made her way into the heart of Kyzikos</a>.</p>

**Accepting the offer**
Zephyra accepted the offer and placed the hemiobol coins in her pouch. The second half of the day was now hers to [[do with as she may]].
**An End to the Bartering**
The Fishmonger laughed and said, "Fool girl. I admire your courage, but that was a good offer. You have wasted enough of my time. Be gone." The crowd, astonished at the revelation, turned towards her. Some of the group even backed away from the hooded figure.
(either:"A woman, ready to haul a basket of newly-caught fish to the Agora, looked at Zephyra in condemnation.","A fisherman frowned at Zephyra.","Voices, some hushed and other not so, discussed the violation.") All, except Alexandros, whispered this and that regarding the proper roles of men and women.
In the end, Zephyra attracted his attention again after an hour or so. She sold the fish for a modest sum and the eel for much less than it was worth. She placed the meager hemiobol coins in her pouch. For better or worse, the second half of the day was now hers to [[do with as she may]].
