Chuk and the Arena – walkthrough with hints

General tips


- Remember you can examine and combine items in your inventory.
- Talk to people around the ship; they can often provide useful information.
- Remember about Chuk’s colour changing ability!


Part one – Gaaarg

Finding out Gaaarg’s weakness

Hint 1: Chuk needs a good plan to stand a chance against Gaaarg. Try to find some information about your opponent; ask around or check in the library!
Hint 2: You can get information on Gaaarg by: asking the variably-eyed lady in the main lobby; asking the librarian who will point you to a certain book in the library. This should give you an idea of what your opponent’s weak point is. The scene in which you see Gerg in the lobby should also give you a clue.
Solution: As evidenced by Gaaarg slamming into the red barrier in the lobby, bumping into the janitor wearing the red suit and by the remarks on Torrarians’ vision in Gallord's Guide to the Aliens of the Galaxy, Gaaarg can’t see anything red!

The unhelpful librarian
If the librarian doesn’t want to recommend you any books and doesn’t let you borrow her scissors, here’s what to do:
Hint 1: The way the librarian responds to your questions (her emotional state) should give you a clue!
Hint 2: Check Gallord's Guide to the Aliens of the Galaxy in the library to identify the librarian’s race and learn about its peculiarities.
Solution: The librarian, a Zizzian, is extremely sensitive to colours. Chuk’s current colour will affect the way she treats him! To get her in the good mood, set Chuk’s colour to green before talking to her. Then you’ll be able to ask about book recommendations and get the scissors.

Getting to the service area
Hint 1: Someone gets past the Securibot and under the barrier without any problem. How could you use that to your advantage?
Hint 2: To fool the Securibot, Chuk has to look like a Quik. Find a way to create a disguise for him!
Hint 3: Set the right skin colour and find objects with which to create a fake head that will look like a Quik’s.
Solution: Set Chuk’s colour to blue and, while in the eastern corridor, put on the fake Quik head. You can obtain the head by combining two items: the scissors and the blue foam ball you get by talking to the girl in the main lobby.

Defeating Gaaarg
Hint 1: If you found out Gaaarg’s weakness, you know you can become invisible to your opponent by being red!
Hint 2: Changing Chuk’s skin colour to red isn’t enough! Try to find something red for him to wear.
Hint 3: There's a person on the ship wearing red clothes. Ask them where to look for clothes like those.
Solution: You need to both set Chuk’s skin colour to red and put on the red janitor’s overalls you can find in the storeroom, in the service area, before going to the arena vestibule to start the match.

Part two – Princess Ochra

Finding out Ochra’s weakness

Hint: A scene you will witness after defeating Gaaarg will give you some hints about Ochra’s weaknesses. You can also ask Baron von Schmerzkopf in the western corridor and check Gallord’s in the library.
Solution: Ochra’s great strengths are her sword mastery and her fighting spirit. You’ll need to make sure she doesn’t have her swords with her in the arena and that her determination is undermined. Exploiting Ochra’s superstitious nature can solve one of these problems!

Getting the paint from the maintenance man
The maintenance man in the guest wing has a can of gold spray paint which looks very useful. However, he doesn’t want to part with it…
Hint 1: Talk to the man to learn that he’s a herpetologist by profession. Find something that could scare away an expert like him!
Hint 2: Find an animal and a way to make it seem dangerous. Check the pet shop in the western corridor and the library to learn more!
Hint 3: A book titled Poisonous Animals and Where to Find Them and the pets’ descriptions in the shop can both provide clues.
Hint 4: If the maintenance man seems less than impressed by the Korrian Horned Toad, try to convince him it’s in fact the deadly Rokkian Hissing Toad.
Hint 5: Find a way to replicate the telltale hissing sound. There is an item you can buy that will make a loud hiss if used in a certain way.
Solution: Buy a Korrian Horned Toad in the pet shop booth in the western corridor (you’ll need some MEC for that – see Getting money below). Use it on the maintenance man. He won’t be impressed, so you’ll have to make the toad seem dangerous.

A Korrian Horned Toad looks almost identical to a deadly dangerous Rokkian Hissing Toad. Buy a bottle of M’zzur Soda from the vending machine in the north-western corridor. Shake the bottle and open it when you’re in the guest wing. If you’ve placed the toad on the floor earlier, the maintenance man will be convinced the animal is getting ready to attack and will run away, dropping the can of gold spray paint, which is now yours!


Getting money
Here’s how to earn some MEC (M’zzur Enterprises Credits):
Hint 1: Talk to Baron von Schmerzkopf in the western corridor to learn he’s writing a book on alien races and offers money to aliens willing to provide information about their home planets. This should easily get you 100 MEC. Pay attention to Baron’s words to learn how to earn more.
Hint 2: The Baron seems fully convinced that one’s skin colour corresponds to the terrain type of their home planet.
Solution: Offer to help Baron von Schmerzkopf with his book four times, each time with a different skin colour selected. Baron will be convinced he’s talking to a different alien each time and will gladly pay 400 MEC in total for Chuk’s “help”.

Getting the leeks from the kitchen
There are some nice, large leeks lying around in the kitchen, but the Chef-bot won’t just let you take them.
Hint 1: Talk to the Chef-bot to learn General Vox is angry with it and it’s preparing a special soup to steal her heart. Use that to your advantage!
Hint 2: Spike the soup with something the General won’t like, then make sure the soup gets served. Look around the ship to find the right ingredient!
Solution: Obtain the reddish leaf from the conservatory (use your scissors on the reddish plant) and use it on the small pot in the kitchen. Then tell the Chef-bot the special soup is ready (you’ll first need to ask it if the soup’s done, after which it will order you to watch over it). After a scene ending with the Chef-bot removed from the kitchen, you’ll be able to pick up the large leeks.

Ochra’s swords
You can find Princess Ochra’s swords in the repair shop, in the service area. You can’t just steal them without rousing suspicion, though.
Hint 1: Find something to swap Ochra’s swords for – something that looks similar enough, but is less dangerous.
Hint 2: The large leeks are about the same size as the swords – but you need to do something about their colour.
Solution: Combine the gold spray paint and the large leeks to get the golden leeks. Then, use them on Ochra’s swords.

Breaking Ochra’s spirit
Hint 1: If you’ve found out Ochra’s weakness, you know she’s very superstitious. Head to the fortune teller’s room to use that to your advantage!
Hint 2: You can learn, from Madame Golgadul herself and from her notebook, that Princess Ochra gets tarot readings frequently. Mess with her next reading to convince her she’s going to lose the match.
Hint 3: Standard tarot cards won’t be enough to scare Ochra. Take a card from the fortune teller’s deck and modify it! Then, set the deck for the reading.
Hint 4: Find someone who can repaint the card for you.
Solution: Take the tarot card from the fortune teller’s room and give it to the painter in the conservatory (if you talked to her earlier, you’ll know she’s ready to paint your portrait if you provide her with good quality paper) to get a personalised card. Use that card on the deck to prepare the cards for Princess Ochra’s reading. Chuk will witness the reading from behind the curtain.

Defeating Ochra
Hint: Exploit Ochra’s weaknesses to win! Find a way to “break her swords” and “break her spirit”.
Solution: Before heading to the arena vestibule to start the match you need to swap Ochra’s swords for golden leeks and mess with Ochra’s tarot reading to convince her she’s going to lose.

Optional quest:
Spoiler: Helping out the Quik, part 1
Look at the Quik in the main lobby or talk to the mechanic in the Quik quarters to learn they need your help in obtaining a “small electronic brain”.
Hint 1: Talk to Baron von Schmerzkopf about his book to learn something useful.
Hint 2: The Baron offers his electronic pocket watch as a “bonus prize” for helping him with the book. You’ll need, however, to tell an especially memorable story to get the bonus.
Hint 3: Look around the ship and learn a moving story about an alien race that you could retell to the Baron. Make sure Chuk’s colour matches the story you’re going to tell.
Solution: Read the chapter on the Obobian in Gallord’s, in the library. Set Chuk’s colour to red, go to Baron von Schmerzkopf and say you’re ready to help him with his book. Relate the story of Oamameo to the Baron to get his pocket watch. Caution – this won’t be possible if you helped the Baron earlier with Chuk’s colour set to red. Give the pocket watch to the Quik, using it either on the Quik in the main lobby, or on the mechanic in the Quik quarters.

Part three – the Cybercricket

Finding out the Cybercricket’s weakness

Hint 1: Watching the fight between the Cybercricket and Abnormal Joe gives you a clue about the Cybercricket’s combat techniques you’ll have to deal with. You can also ask around to learn more details.
Hint 2: Talk to Steve about the Cybercricket destroying the fencing to learn how you could use your opponent’s signature move against him.
Solution: The Cybercricket commands a dangerous swarm of cybernetic crickets and has superhuman strength, which allows him to tear fencing bars from their bases and wield them as weapons. You must find a way to stop, or turn against your opponent, both these attacks!

Getting past the Royal Guard
The Royal Guard blocks the way to the Chairperor’s penthouse.
Hint 1: Talk to the Guard to learn his weakness and find a way to use it against him.
Hint 2: The Guard used to be horrified of insults, but he got rid of this weakness through exposure training. Figure out how to find insults that will work on the Guard anyway.
Hint 3: The Royal Guard is impervious to all insults Chuk can think of. You’ll need something special to scare him away. There’s a book on the ship that can help you.
Hint 4: The Handbook of Insults isn’t working, because the Guard has familiarised himself with its contents. Find a way to create insults he won’t expect. There’s someone on the ship who enjoys creating new words and phrases, who can help.
Solution: Obtain the Handbook of Insults (see Headmistress Raxla’s book below). Go to the library and use the Handbook with THAT’S DEATH’S ROBOT, who will create some new and surprising insults for you. Use the newly obtained Improved Handbook of Insults on the Royal Guard to scare him away.

Headmistress Raxla’s book
Hint 1: Headmistress Raxla, who can now be found in the western corridor, has a book that looks useful. Talk to her to learn on what condition she’s willing to lend the book.
Hint 2: The Headmistress only borrows her book to Xlxian students. Make sure Chuk looks like one.
Hint 3: Xlxians are bald, grey-skinned and have long white beards. Look for the right items to craft fake facial hair.
Solution: Talk to Headmistress Raxla about the Handbook of Insults and ask if you can borrow it. Then, make sure Chuk looks like a Xlxian student. Set Chuk’s skin colour to grey and put on the fake beard you can obtain by combining the elastic band (found in the wicker bin in the fortune teller’s room) and the mop head (found by searching the dirty mops in the storeroom, in the service area). Wearing the disguise, ask Raxla for the book to receive it.

The remote
Hint 1: The remote control you can pick up in the Chairperor’s penthouse can be used to electrify the arena fencing. However, it only works inside the arena dome, so you’ll need to find a way to bring it to the arena for your match.
Hint 2: Since you can’t bring any items (other than weapons, which the remote isn’t) to the arena with you, you’ll need to find somebody who’ll do that for you. You’ll also need to make sure the remote is well camouflaged, so that your opponent won’t notice it.
Hint 3: There’s someone on the ship who goes to the arena before each match and could help.
Hint 4: Talk to the janitor in the eastern corridor.
Solution: Combine the remote control with gold spray paint to get the golden remote control. Talk to the janitor in the eastern corridor and ask “What are you doing here?” to learn he cleans the arena before each match. Use the golden remote control on the janitor – he’ll agree to smuggle it to the arena for you.

Mok-Mok-Tuk’s icebox
Hint 1: Mok-Mok-Tuk, the green, gelatinous alien who can now be found in the eastern corridor, won’t just give you its ice sandwiches. Talk to it to learn about its dilemma, and find a way to help it and convince it to give up the icebox!
Hint 2: Find a low-calories refreshment to give Mok-Mok-Tuk in exchange for the ice sandwiches.
Solution: Use M’zzur Soda on Mok-Mok-Tuk. The green alien will be more than happy to trade the icebox for the bottle!

Finding a way to deal with the Cybercricket’s cricket swarm
Hint 1: Find a way to learn more about crickets. The library doesn’t have any books left that could help, but you can find someone who’s read a lot on crickets.
Hint 2: Talk to THAT’S DEATH’S ROBOT in the library and ask it about crickets. It’s got several useful bits of information to share.
Hint 3: The name the Cybercricket calls his crickets can give you a clue!
Solution: The Cybercricket’s crickets (his “girls”) are all female. Female crickets are drawn to male crickets’ chirping. Use this to your advantage and distract the cricket swarm during the match.

Getting into the ventilation tunnels
Hint: You’ll need a proper tool to remove the metal grate securing the vent opening.
Solution: Use the screwdriver you found on the sofa on the grate in the north-western corridor.

Setting up the crickets
Hint 1: Look around the ship for some live crickets. (Check the pet shop in the western corridor.)
Hint 2: If the crickets escape as soon as you buy them, find a proper packaging before attempting to buy them again.
Hint 3: Find a good place for the crickets, so that they can distract Cybercricket’s “girls”; make sure they don’t start chirping too soon, but do chirp once Chuk’s fight against the Cybercricket has started.
Hint 4: Place the crickets somewhere near the arena. Remember crickets hibernate in low temperatures and wake up when it gets warmer.
Solution: Use the empty icebox (see Turning on the arena heating below) on the pet shop booth in the western corridor. Buy live crickets from the booth (in the Pet foods section). You’ll receive crickets in icebox. Go to the ventilation tunnel and use the crickets on the concrete ledge behind the opening to place them there. Remember that heating for the arena must be turned on for the match if the crickets are to wake up and chirp, see below.

Turning on the arena heating
In the boiler room you can reach through the ventilation tunnels you discover that heating for the arena has been turned off.
Hint: You’ll need someone stronger than Chuk to turn the arena boiler valves. Talking to the mechanic you’ll learn that he’d gladly help you, but he’s too exhausted from the heat. Bring him something to cool him off!
Solution: Use the icebox (see Mok-Mok-Tuk’s icebox above) on the mechanic. After he’s eaten the ice sandwiches, ask him about the arena heating and get him to promise he’ll turn it on for the upcoming match. You’ll also get back the empty icebox.

Defeating the Cybercricket
Hint: Before you go to the arena vestibule to start the final match, make sure you’ve found a way to deal with the cricket swarm and Cybercricket’s special move – using the arena fencing bar as a weapon.
Solution: To win against the Cybercricket, you must have made the following preparations: set the crickets in icebox on the concrete ledge in the ventilation tunnel; get the mechanic in the boiler room to promise he’ll turn on the arena heating for your match; give the golden remote control to the janitor in the eastern corridor to have it smuggled to the arena.

Optional quest:
Spoiler: Helping out the Quik, part 2
Look at the Quik in the main lobby or talk to the mechanic in the Quik quarters. If you’ve already given the Quik the previous item, you’ll learn they need “thin gold foil” now.
Hint: Look around the Chairperor’s penthouse.
Solution: Take the cape of gold from the statue in the Chairperor’s penthouse. Give it to the Quik by using it either on the Quik in the main lobby, or on the mechanic in the Quik quarters.

Part four – the finale

Spying on General Vox

Hint: Remember the videophone call in the Chairperor’s penthouse? After your fight with the Cybercricket go to the conservatory to find out what’s going on. Make sure you won’t get noticed and caught!
Solution: Go to the conservatory, set Chuk’s colour to green and hide among the greenery to witness General Vox's conversation with the Chairperor.

Finding Steve
Hint 1: You’ll need something to track down Steve’s location. There’s an item you can buy with all that money you got from Vox that will help.
Hint 2: You could use the Homing Rocket Pigeon to track down Steve. However, you need the recipient’s precise identifying data for that.
Hint 3: There’s an item that can provide Steve’s personal data. Look for it in the main lobby.
Solution: Buy the Homing Rocket Pigeon from the pet shop booth in the western corridor. Get behind the counter in the main lobby and pick up Steve’s business card. Combine the business card with the pigeon to send the bird to Steve. On the prison level use scissors on Steve's tied hands to free him.

Getting to General Vox’s private quarters
Hint 1: After you’ve used the access card on the golden door in the north-eastern corridor, you’ll still need to deal with Rex – General Vox’s pet. Rex is Xlxian mastiff – this knowledge might be useful.
Hint 2: The way Rex reacts when Chuk first sees it might give you a clue. You can also learn a way to deal with Rex by checking books in the library, (specifically, the CYOA book Tlazl of Danger! A Xlxian Adventure). Once you know Rex’s “weak point”, use the right item on the beast.
Hint 3: On Tlazl of Danger: if you can’t get through the book, don’t worry – after a couple of different “bad endings” Chuk will lose his patience and you’ll be able to skip to the last page.
Solution: As you may learn from Tlazl of Danger!, when a Xlxian mastiff makes eye contact with its prey, it won’t move an inch unless the prey moves first. Use the fake Quik head on Rex to put it in front of the beast, which will freeze in place. You’ll then be able to get through the northern door of the short corridor.

Disabling General Vox’s starship
Hint 1: Search for General Vox’s starship somewhere close to her quarters.
Hint 2: Examine the posters in the waiting room.
Solution: In the waiting room, examine the middle poster. Look at the reader more closely. Then, use the access card on the middle poster. Take the secret lift down to the launch bay. Examine the starship, then select “Disable the ship”.

Optional quest:
Spoiler: Helping out the Quik, part 3
Look at the Quik in the main lobby or talk to the mechanic in the Quik quarters. If you’ve already given the Quik the previous item, you’ll learn they need some rocket fuel now.
Hint: The Quik will tell you where you should look for the fuel.
Solution: After you’ve disabled General Vox’s starship, head to the main lobby and use the solid rocket fuel on the Quik.


Final steps
Hint: After getting back up in the secret lift, it’s time to start the final confrontation. In the waiting room, select “Stay here and wait on Vox's next move” to proceed to the final part of the game!
Solution: Proceed through the dialogue to reach the ending.
Spoiler: The game has two endings, depending on whether you helped the Quik with all three requests or not. If you did, there will be one final puzzle:
Spoiler: Defeating Chairperor M’zzur!
Hint: Remember General Vox saying “There's only one Chairperor M'zzur”?
Solution: Use the Homing Rocket Pigeon on the Chairperor.
