A FINE DAY FOR REAPING ** WALKTHROUGH ** ---------------------------------------- Thank you for playing 'A Fine Day for Reaping'. Well, I'm assuming that you've at least tried to play it before resorting to reading the walkthrough you big wuss. Anyway, I don't blame you. One of the things about it is that it's a fairly open-ended game with multiple paths through it and multiple ways of solving the puzzles. This can leave you with the feeling that you're missing a lot of stuff when in actual fact you're not. Here's some general comments about the game before we get into the walkthrough. i) The game plays under a timer, but hopefully that shouldn't trouble you. I didn't want to discourage the player from exploring and having fun. ii) Don't forget to take your Scythe from the stable, You can't reap souls without it. iii) And don't drop The List. You can't travel without it, so just keep it with you. There's no need to drop it. iv) At the end of the game you are given a paragraph for each soul that you reaped. The paragraph details what happened to some of the people involved after your involvement in their lives. The paragraph reflects the way that you solved the puzzle, so if you're such a fan of my writing that you just *have* to read all the endings then you'll need to solve all of the puzzles below. v) Which brings me to my final point. I assume that you can navigate the game well enough, so this walkthrough will simply detail the different ways to bring the individual souls to justice and allow you to see all of the endings. I will go into detail about how to solve parts of the key puzzles only once (e.g. how to get the time machine working) and where they are referred to in other parts of the walkthrough I will just mention briefly the steps that are needed. So let's begin... SOUL 1 - Lord Nigel McWorthington --------------------------------- Nigel is buried under a snowdrift in Nepal. You have to get to his body to reap his soul. There are two ways to solve this puzzle. WAY 1 ----- You need to get a spade to dig him out. This is fairly straightforward. Near the lake in Kenya there is a sturdy branch. In the Storage Cupboard in Area 51 you will find the shovel blade. Then travel to Manchester. In the cellar in Manchester you need to examine the workbench - don't worry about the magnet at the moment, examine the workbench will make you aware of the masking tape. You can use this to repair the shovel. Head back to the mountain pass, dig the snowdrift and reap Nigel's soul. Too easy. WAY 2 ----- This is more of a challenge. You will need to go to Manchester and examine the workbench, but this time what you need is the magnet that you take. While in Manchester explore the house to find the living room and take the time machine papers. Next you need to go to San Francisco. Although San Francisco is not mentioned on your list you will find clues telling you that it's a worthwhile place to visit both in your kitchen (it's where your dry cleaners can be found) and in Area 51 (one of the posters in the barracks tells you). When in San Francisco find the hardware store. In the hardware store examine the counter to notice the coil of wire, and then simply take it. Then zoom off to Area 51. Go to the security room and push the button to unlock the lab. Enter the lab and enter the time machine. You have everything that you need to repaire the time machine. If you read the time machine instructions you'll find that someone has scrawled the year 5,500 AD on the bottom. Type 5500 to travel to that year (pressing the red button if need be to set the time machine to 'AD' rather than 'BC'). While in the future search the workbench to find the broken solar-powered heater. Ask the man about the heater and he'll tell you that it needs a magnet to work, which you just happen to have. Repair the heater, get back in the time machine to come home. Then travel back to the mountain pass and melt the snowdrift with the heater. Reap soul and you've solved this puzzle. SOUL 2 - Ernest Busset ---------------------- Ernest has been sent back in time to the past. There are, again, two ways to get to his soul. WAY 1 ----- To do this you'll need to travel back in time to where Ernest is. If you search the wreckage of the time machine in the cellar you'll find that the year Ernest has been sent to is 10,097 BC. You'll need to get the time machine in Area 51 working - (see Lord Nigel McWorthington, WAY 2 : You'll need the time machine plans and the coil of wire). When in the working time machine type 10097 (after having used the red button to set the time machine 'BC' if necessary). You'll travel back in time to 10,097 BC where it's simply a matter of reaping Ernest's soul and then getting back in the machine to go home. WAY 2 ----- Instead of travelling back in time you can simply find out where Ernest would be *now*. Seeing as he should be dead, he doesn't age and will still be 'alive'. Don't ask. Anyway, what you need to do is get the shovel (see Lord Nigel McWorthington, WAY 1: You'll need the sturdy branch, the shovel blade and to search the workbench in Manchester to find the masking tape). You then need to travel to Fada in Chad. A bit obscure this one, but if you read the diaries in your living room a few times you should find the entry that tells you that you lost your door key in Fada. When in Fada dig with the shovel and you'll find your old door key (the skeleton key). Travel to Area 51 and go to the Security Room. In there you should be able to enter the armoury using the skeleton key. Take the explosives. Travel to San Francisco (the dry cleaning ticket or the poster in the barracks will give you the clue to go there) and find the book shop. Inside the book shop read the encyclopedia a few times until it tells you that someone found a cave in Italy that is blocked by rocks. Travel to Follina in Italy and use the explosives to remove the rocks from the cave mouth. Go into the cave and bingo! Reap soul and that's that. SOUL 3 - Jimiyu Wangai ---------------------- Jimiyu is refusing to go quietly until you beat him at chess. There are three possible ways to solve this puzzle. WAy 1 ----- The easiest way is to get better at chess. Travel to San Francisco and find the book shop. You should find a chess guide on the bookshelf, which you can read to get better at chess. Travel back to Kenya and play Jimiyu. Then Reap his soul. WAY 2 ----- Getting a bit more complex. Go to the bookshop in San Francisco and read the encyclopedia until it tells you that the rules to chess were invented in 4002 BC (not true by the way). The you need to repair the time machine in Area 51 (See Lord Nigel McWorthington, WAY 2: You'll need the time travel plans from Manchester and the coil of wire from the Hardware store in San Fran). Use the red button to select 'BC' and then enter 4002. Head over to the tent and go inside. You'll see them talking about their new game. Ask them about the game and they'll decide that Black should start. Travel back home in the time machine and then back to Kenya and play chess. After you win then Reap Jimiyu's soul and do a little dance to celebrate (note: dance optional). WAY 3 ----- Now this is just stupid. One of the things that should come across from Jimiyu is that he's trying to hang on to see his granddaughter get married. If you can convince her to get married straight away then Jimiyu will surrender happily. Enter the large hut in Kenya to find Abuya, Jimiyu's granddaughter. Ask her about the wedding and she'll tell you that she will get married right away if you can find her a nice dress and a suitable wedding present for her husband-to-be. Go to Manchester and take Ernest Busset's shoe. Travel to San Francisco and then find the costume shop. In the costume shop offer the man the shoe and he'll exchange it for a mask or a wedding gown. Choose the gown, for obvious reasons. Then travel to the hotel in France. While there try getting in and out of the lift a few times until you bump into the pizza delivery guy. Examine him and then try to take the leaflet. It will tell you about the Magnifipizza HQ in Nantes. While in the hotel go down to the ground floor and then from the lobby to the dining room. Examine a table and then take a menu. Travel to Nantes and ask the receptionist about pizza. Give him the menu and he'll give you a voucher for free pizza. Take the gown and the voucher to Abuya, give them to her (one at a time) and the wedding will go ahead. Head back to Jimiyu's hut and the Reap Soul. SOUL 4 - Agathe Laurent ----------------------- Agathe has managed to find a way of creating a barrier to keep you away from her. There are three ways around this. WAY 1 ----- The easy way. In the security room at Area 51 you'll find a cigarette lighter. Go back to the hotel room and use the lighter to set off the smoke alarm. The sprinklers will wash away the chalk circle and you can then reap away at your leisure. WAY 2 ----- Go to the hardware shop at San Francisco and use the lucky dip. Take the blunt saw back to the stable at your house, and use the whetstone to sharpen it. For the next part you'll need either the skeleton key or the credit card. The skeleton key (see Ernest Busset WAY 2: You'll need to read your diaries until you read about Fada, get the shovel blade and branch and use the masking tape in Manchester to repair the shovel and then dig in the desert in Fada). To get the credit card then take the letter from Blackbury bank out of your bin in the hallway (you threw it in there after picking up your mail near the start of the game). Travel to Swindon and go into the bank. Give the credit card letter to the bank clerk and you'll get the credit card. Once you've got the key or the credit card travel back to the hotel. If you have the key you can get straight into room 147, otherwise go down to the receptionist in the lobby and ask him about a room. Then you can get into room 147. Once in room 147 use the saw to saw the ceiling. Agathe will drop down into room 147, out of the chalk circle. Savour the moment and the reap away. WAY 3 ----- In the hotel use the lift until you find the pizza delivery boy. Examine him and take the leaflet. Head to Nantes and ask the Magnifipizza receptionist about a job. He will give you a pizza uniform. Go back to the hotel and put the uniform on (you can only do this in the hotel) following which you'll automatically go to room 247 and lure Agathe off the bed. You can then reap her soul. Job done. SOUL 5 - Splong5b ----------------- Splong5b is an alien and is currently in the autopsy room at Area 51. The difficult thing is that the autopsy room is guarded by the very keen Private Kline, who needs to be removed or bypassed. There are three ways to solve this puzzle. WAY 1 ----- You need to travel into the future. I've already explained how to get the time machine working several times (See Lord Nigel McWorthington WAY 2) so won't do it again...oh, OK. You need the time machine plans from Manchester and the coil of wire from the Hardware store in San Francisco. Unlock the lab in Area 51 by pushing the button in the security room. Enter the time machine and repair it. The instructions have the year 5,500 AD scrawled on them, so travel to this year. Search the workbench and you'll find the meshomatic. Get back into the time machine to return to Area 51. Go to the barracks and use the meshomatic on the air duct in the corner of the room. Crawl through the air ducts and you'll find your way into the autopsy room. Reap Splong5b's soul and then you can leave the room and never come back. WAY 2 ----- Go to Manchester and take Ernest Busset's shoe. Go to San Francisco and enter the costume shop. Give the shoe to the man and he'll offer you a mask or a gown. Take the mask. Head back to Area 51 and wear the mask (you can only put it on in Area 51). You'll automatically lure Private Kline away from the door where he'll become incapacitated in the Storage Cupboard. Enter the autopsy room and reap soul. Nice. WAY 3 ----- Take the dry cleaning ticket from the notice board in your kitchen. Head to San Francisco and find the dry cleaners. Hand over your ticket. In an hil-arious mix up you will end up with the wrong outfit. Next travel to Area 51 and go to the Security room. Read the notices on the noticeboard and you will read about 'Agent Sunglasses' and 'Blue Sparrow'. Go to the hotel in Paris and use the lift until you meet a man wearing a trenchcoat and sunglasses say 'Blue Sparrow' to him. He'll give you some false papers. Return to Area 51 and wear the uniform that you got from the dry cleaner's (You won't be able to wear it anywhere else). You'll automatically convince Private Kline to go and take a break. Once this is done then you can enter the autopsy room and reap to your little heart's content. And that's it. The complete lowdown on how to achieve all the endings for each of the characters.
